This Thursday we took part in the latest in a long line of Slide Night’s from Sydney Flat Track team, The Jerkyls. In a crowded room scented with fresh paint, gasoline and the odd whiff of quality beers, I laced the walls with a select few shots from some of our more visually stimulating articles over the past few months.

In the interest of getting all of our readers in on the action, I thought I would feature the 4 selected shots here in a bit of an online motorcycle photography exhibition with a back story to each one.

Chris & I had chatted online a few times about meeting up for a ride.  We both ride Harley Forty-Eights and with Chris’s being a particularly special one, I was really keen to see it in the flesh.

One Sunday my friend Simon & I rode down to Harry’s Café to meet Chris. We chatted for a while about the modifications we both had completed or had in the pipeline, and then headed down to the local National Park drive to take some shots through the woods.

This spot is usually pretty busy, especially on a Sunday as the usual groups of joy riders are out, blitzing their sports bikes through the twisties. But somehow on this Sunday, we were blessed with empty roads and clear skies.  Enough to fire off dozens of photographs in the same area, with no other vehicles in view.  This was my favourite of the day.

Arden’s ‘Time Machine’ SR400

Arden had been one of the most active followers of our Instagram page, taggin’ us in all of his modifications and riding shots. His bike is one that you can’t forget and definitely demands attention when thumbing through the hundreds of shots in the ‘#ninetynineco’ stream each morning.

I shot him a message asking about a few of the finer details and we lined up a shoot for the following Saturday. It was a bit further afield than the usual shoots, but it gave my friend Rob & I an excuse to go for a decent ride and get out of the city for the day.

This shot was taken on the Old Pacific Highway, looking out at one of the only breaks in the trees down onto the waters below. I jumped off my bike and climbed up onto a rock structure (seen in other shots in the article) to get a decent vantage point and it all fell into place.  Arden rounded the bend with no other traffic around him (this is another popular weekend spot) and I wasn’t quite in the spot that I need to be so I ramped up my shutter speed with a quick flick, ran accross the rock enough to catch him just before he rode out of frame.  It was total fluke, and the fact that the power lines lined up perfectly was a bonus. (Admittedly  I cropped to get them perfectly into the top right corner).

Escape from Bare Islandninetynineco the jerkyls slide night photography exhibition sydney australia oxford street low road 76 ryan waring photos motorcycle custom moto culture pipeburn

We’d had at least a week of perfect weather, clear skies and dry roads so I organised with Rob (riding my bike in the shot) to meet up at dawn to go and catch a nice orange sunrise at Bare Island.  This shot was inspired (if not slightly stolen) from a recent shot by local photographer Andy Roberts – who incidentally is featured in the next photograph. It was one of those photo’s where you see it, and know that even though it’s already out there, you absolutely have to go and shoot it.

As you can see from the shot the weather didn’t live up to it’s forecast, turning out to be a pretty overcast days with no sunlight in sight. (Go and check out Andy’s shot if you want to see how it should look in decent light.)

Andy’s BMW R80

Andy is a local photographer who has had some great success within the motorcycle scene, and has also shot some stuff for us in the past.

Introduced by a friend, and after a cheap steak and couple of cheeky beers, we organised a ride and to do a build feature of his R80. For an older bike, this thing is in amazing condition and the tank is a real highlight, complimenting the rear arch and his new pipes.

We waiting for golden hour and after and afternoon of shooting slow shutter motion shots, I started firing off faster shots and taking advantage of the sun bursting through the industrial backdrop.
